Howard Bennie Taylor age 88 of Louisville, Kentucky died Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky. Funeral services were held Monday, July 30, 2012 at 1:00 pm at the McCreary County Funeral Home with Rev. Rufus Hughes officiating. Burial followed in the McCreary Memorial Gardens.

He was born May 11, 1924 in Peel Dogwood of Marshes Siding, Kentucky to John Dave Taylor and Sarah Mae (Jones) Taylor. Mr. Taylor was a member of the Sand Hill Baptist Church. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in WWII. In addition to the Army, he was a member of the VFW and DAV, and was the last of McCreary County’s twenty-four World War II, prisoners of War (POW) Howard was captured 17 February 1944, in Anzio Italy.  Placed in a German “cattle car” used to deport Jewish people to death camps.  He was sent to Augsburg, Germany, where he remained until liberation 14 May 1945. Awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Combat Badge, POW Medal along with other service awards.  He will be remembered by the comrades and friends as a good-hearted, jovial, hero among heroes. His mother and father precede him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Lee (Abbott) Taylor; a son, Ben Taylor; a daughter, Donna Carolyn Pusateri; brother, Willard Taylor; 4 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
