Elvaree “Dessie” Gentry departed from this life on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset, Kentucky, being 87 years, 6 months, and 28 days old. She was born on April 11, 1930 in Smithtown, Kentucky, to the late Charlie Hickman and Elizabeth Black.

Elvaree was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She was a caretaker of the Hickman Cemetery, she was a sales person for Blair, and she owned and operated a shoe store called Bell Brothers in Slavans. She enjoyed going to the flea market in Revelo, canning food, gardening, sewing, and quilting. She loved animals, and talking on the CB (her handle was Grapevine).

She is preceded in death by her husband: Don H. Gentry whom she was married to for 47 years, son: James Gentry, daughter: Doreen Pendleton, brothers: Hubert Hickman, Hobert Hickman, Ruben Hickman, and Kenneth Hickman, sister: Anna Owen, special friends: Donnie Ingram and Eloise Violes.

Surviving family includes: sons: Joe Gentry of Stearns, Kentucky, Ray Gentry of Stearns, Kentucky, Luke (wife Terri) Gentry of Florence, Kentucky, Robert “Bob” (wife Lynn) Gentry of Augusta, Kentucky, Bruce Gentry of Stearns, Kentucky, Clay (wife Debbie) Gentry of Stearns, Kentucky, daughters: Alma Soards of Georgetown, Kentucky, Nona (husband Charlie) Hein of Alexandria , Kentucky, sisters: Glenna Tyree, Joyce Morrow, Louis Iseral, Ruby Yancey, Brenda Sue Hornback, Lenna Lou Dykes, 41 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, great niece: Carla Peters who was also her caretaker, special friends: Claymon and Ellen Marlow, and James Shepherd.

Funeral Services: Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at 11:00 A.M., in the chapel of McCreary County Funeral Home with Bro. Scottie Corder officiating.

Visitation: Monday, November 13, 2017 from 6:00-9:00 P.M., at the funeral home.

Burial: Hickman Cemetery
