In Loving Memory of Larry Alan Monday

On December 26, 2023, at the age of 79, we bid farewell to Larry Alan Monday, born on February 1, 1944, in Tiffin, Ohio. Larry was the 2nd son of John Witcher Monday of Whitley City, KY, and Bonnie Sigmund of Tiffin, Ohio, and was joyously welcomed into the world by his older brother, John Stephen (Steve) Monday.

In 1952, John, a newly divorced single father, moved to East Tennessee with his two sons, where he lovingly raised them to adulthood. In 1953, while living in Oakridge, TN, John met and married Gloria Lafay Hoff of Alpine, KY. Larry, considering Gloria as his mother, credited her for instilling a deep-rooted faith and providing a home filled with love and stability.

In 1956, while still in Oakridge, the family expanded with the arrival of Larry’s sister, Amy Ellen Monday. Larry's high school years were spent in Kingsport, TN, where he not only completed his education but also formed enduring relationships that would shape the rest of his life. Kingsport and Southeast KY were the places Larry always felt the most at home.

After Larry graduated high school, the family welcomed Larry’s brother, John Matthew Monday, into the world. Larry, learning of the news while in Army basic training, would soon transition into the National Guard, serving in Tennessee, Florida, and California.

In 1964, while still in the Army, the family relocated to Rockledge, FL. Larry soon followed and secured employment at Trans World Airlines (TWA), a space support contractor. Late in the 1960s, Larry’s job with TWA moved him to Los Angeles, CA, where he lived until 1993. He retired from the airlines in 1995, after brief stints in Atlanta and St. Louis.

A self-proclaimed Hillbilly, Larry thrived in Manhattan Beach, CA, for 25 years, forging deep, unbreakable friendships everywhere he went. Larry's TWA career allowed him to travel the world, often journeying to far-off lands just to sit with friends and play cards, recognizing the true value of life in the connections he made with people.

After retiring, Larry returned to Kingsport, TN, renewing old friendships and forming new ones. In the early 2000s, Larry moved to Southeast KY, to the cabin he and his father built in 1986—the only home Larry ever owned, where he would spend the remainder of

his life. Here, he hosted countless gatherings, instilling in all of us his passion for people and relationships.

Larry actively participated in historical and genealogical research, societies, and conversations, passionately seeking old cemeteries and lost graves. He often rebuilt the memories of those he found, passing them down to friends and relatives who had long since lost the stories of their people.

Larry is survived by his Mom Gloria Monday, sister Amy Monday (Bill Roh), brother John Monday (Vickie); nieces Michelle Guessetto (Matt), Stephanie Wilhelm, and Taylor Monday; nephews Shannon Monday, Matthew McNabb, Andrew McNabb, John ‘Luke’ Monday, Jacob Guessetto, and Daniel Guessetto, and countless friends who have become as close as family. He was predeceased by his father John W. Monday, mother Bonnie Sigmund, and brother Steve Monday.

Larry’s Funeral will be held at Neely’s Creek Baptist Church, 355 Neeleys Creek Church Rd., Burnside, KY (in the community of Alpine) on Sunday, Dec 31, at 3:00 PM, with viewing beginning at 1:30 PM. A graveside service will follow, and a meal hosted by the church will conclude the services. All are welcome to join together at Larry’s cabin Sunday evening and any time Monday to share food and memories. Larry's legacy lives on through the countless friends and family he leaves behind. May he rest in eternal peace.
