Margrit Dahmen, age 93, passed away on July 22, 2025. She was born in Bochum, Germany, on January 4, 1932, to Wladislaus and Pauline Grabarek.
In 1957, Margrit and her husband Henrick immigrated to the United States, settling in Chicago, Illinois. She held various jobs, including cleaning for Illinois Bell Telephone Company and working in a seatbelt factory, before spending 20 dedicated years at Fel-Pro until her retirement in 1994.
A self-taught English speaker, Margrit learned the language through television, radio, neighbors, co-workers—and most lovingly—from her daughter. She found joy in family gatherings, knitting and crocheting, and always had cats nearby to keep her company. Her greatest treasure in life was her daughter Kornelia and her five grandchildren.
Margrit was preceded in death by her beloved husband Henrick (1980), her companion Fritz Schmeisser, and her brothers Edmund, Alfred, and Helmut Grabarek.
She is survived by her daughter, Kornelia Dahmen-Delgado of Mt. Vernon, Kentucky; five grandchildren: John Walker (Johnsburg, IL), Andrew Walker (Whitley City, KY), Elizabeth Mansfield (Oneida, TN), Alice Garland-Jones (Brodhead, KY), and Jennifer Garland (Gurnee, IL); 12 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
In March 2025, Margrit made a profound declaration of faith, raising her hand from her hospital bed and calling out, “Jesus! I believe,” accepting Him as her Savior.
Her vibrant spirit and kindness will be remembered forever by all who knew her.
