Phillip Jones

Phillip Merle Jones, age 79 years, of the Smithtown Community died Sunday, August 25, 2024 at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, Kentucky.

He was born in Oneida, Tennessee on November 5, 1944 the son of the late Ernest and Lula (Waters) Jones.

Phillip attended the East Appletree United Baptist Church. He had been a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service for over 60 years, starting that journey with his parents and eventually took on routes of his own with his wife. That tradition passed down to his children and grandchildren. While being a mail man he also drove a coal truck and gravel truck. Phillip enjoyed racing and racecars, four-wheeling, working on old cars and trucks, adventures, and traveling. If you ever traveled with him, you knew there were no limits, and you need to pack a lunch for the ride. Phillip never met a stranger and would help anyone even at his own expense. He would literally give you the shirt off his back, wheel and tire from his own vehicle, or even the battery from his own car and roll start his so you made it home. The man was genuine in everything he done. The four F’s were his motto: Fay, Faith, Family and Ford and depending on the day, the order they came in. Phillip had many hobbies in life, but if you really knew him, you knew his grandbabies were the true light of his life.

His parents; five brothers, James Jones, Ernest “Doc” Jones, Jr., Gene Jones, Morris Jones, and Donald Jones; and five sisters, Claire Flynn, Shirley Key, Virginia Ruth Jones, Gladys Katherine Jones, and Shirley Adkins precede him in death.

Survivors include his wife of over 60 years, Fay (Angel) Jones of Smithtown, Kentucky; son, Merle Jones (and Missy Richardson) of Smithtown, Kentucky; daughter, Jeanna Griffis (husband, Curtis) of Somerset, Kentucky; grandchildren, Angel Stephens, Amy Power (husband, Scott), Paige Jones, and Aaron Jones (wife, Courtney); and great grandchildren, Grace, Nate, Alex, Gabi, Sadie, LilyAnne, Rowan, and Maddie.

Also surviving are a host of extended family, special friends, and a community who will miss him deeply.

Funeral services will be held 8pm Tuesday, August 27, 2024 at the McCreary County Funeral Home with Bro. Johnnie Wayne Inman officiating. A private family burial will be in the Hickman Cemetery. The family will receive friends after 6pm Tuesday at the Funeral Home and Wednesday, August 28, 2024 from 10am-12pm at the Funeral Home.
